Bangabarta Bureau: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister and founding head of the ‘Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’ (PTI) party, Imran Khan, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by an anti-corruption court in the country. He was arrested from the court premises two years ago while seeking bail in the same case. The anti-corruption court in the prison near Islamabad where Imran Khan is being held has convicted the couple for a welfare foundation they established together called Al-Qadir Trust.
Imran’s wife Bushra Bibi has also been found guilty in the case and has been sentenced to seven years in prison. In December 2023, a land corruption case was filed against Imran. It was alleged that the former Pakistani Prime Minister had committed corruption worth 190 pounds in the name of establishing Al-Qadir University. This figure is around 20 thousand crore rupees in Indian currency. Khan has been in jail since August 2023, with around 200 cases against him.
Although Imran Khan claims that this is politically motivated and designed to prevent him from returning to power. Geo News reported that Prosecutor General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi, who heads Pakistan’s anti-corruption agency National Accountability Bureau (NAB), was present in Adiala during the verdict. Besides, Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, Gahar Khan, Shoaib Shaheen, Salman Akram Raza and several other lawyers were present.
