Bongobarta Bureau,
For the first time in West Bengal, a unique book fair solely dedicated to visually impaired and specially-abled authors, writers, and poets was organized by the non-profit organization NIP. This one-day event also featured an impressive collection of Braille books, making it truly inclusive and groundbreaking.
The event was inaugurated by Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Minister-in-Charge Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal. Renowned poet Subodh Sarkar graced the occasion as the special guest, alongside Chumki Chattopadhyay, co-owner of Patra Bharati, and other distinguished personalities from the literary and social spheres.
This pioneering initiative brought a wave of excitement and pride among the specially-abled authors, who were overjoyed to have a platform dedicated solely to their literary contributions. The fair showcased their creative brilliance, sending a powerful message that their talents are integral to society. Through their compelling works, they proved that they are far from marginalized. The event also provided an opportunity for the writers and poets to share their insights, encouraging both literary and social awareness.
In addition to the publication of their works, the event featured live poetry recitals and storytelling sessions by the participating authors. Engaging discussions on contemporary themes added depth to the program. Topics included the representation of specially-abled individuals in Bengali literature, the history of Bengali literary traditions, and the impact of digital media on the literary landscape.
Debjyoti Roy, Secretary, NIP, remarked, “The objective of this book fair was to demonstrate that physical or mental challenges are not barriers to pursuing literary excellence.”
This extraordinary initiative has set a benchmark for inclusivity and creativity, creating a lasting impact on the literary world and society at large.
