Petition to ban Indian TV channels in Bangladesh filed in Bangladesh High Court

A petition has been filed in the Bangladesh High Court expressing concern over the growing influence of Indian media on Bangladeshi culture and society. The petition has sought a ban on Indian TV channels in Bangladesh to prevent the influence of subculture. The petition, filed by lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan on Monday, has demanded a ban on the broadcasting of Indian TV channels in Bangladesh under the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006. According to a report published in the Dhaka Tribune, it has also sought to know why an order to ban Indian TV channels in Bangladesh will not be issued, the petitioner said. The petition is likely to be heard by a High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najeeb and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi. The petition has named the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Home Affairs, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and others as respondents. According to a report published in the Dhaka Tribune, the petition has demanded a ban on Star Plus, Star Jalsa, Zee Bangla, Republic Bangla and all other Indian TV channels. The petition claims that Indian TV channels do not follow any rules. It also alleges that the uncontrolled broadcasting of anti-Bangladeshi cultural content through those TV channels is destroying the country’s youth.
