In a powerful address delivered on National Space Day 2025, the Prime Minister of India issued a dual challenge to the nation’s burgeoning private space industry. The Prime Minister called for the creation of five new “unicorns”—privately held startups valued at over $1 billion—within the next five years.
“I call upon our space startups—can we build five unicorns in the next five years?” the Prime Minister stated, emphasizing the government’s support for private innovation and growth.
In a separate but related appeal, the Prime Minister also urged the private sector to dramatically increase the country’s rocket launch capabilities. The ambitious target is for India to reach a stage where it can launch 50 rockets annually within the next five years. To achieve this, the Prime Minister assured the industry that the necessary reforms would be carried out by the government with “determination and willpower.”
The twin challenges underscore the government’s commitment to empowering private enterprise and solidifying India’s position as a major player in the global space economy.
